The present study aimed to determine the digestibility of two types of hay (alfalfa and oat) supplemented with a probiotic in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), evaluating its effect on digestibility, productive performance, and feed efficiency. The study was conducted under a randomized complete block design (RCBD), using 100 guinea pigs distributed into five treatments: control group, alfalfa hay with 3 g and 5 g of probiotic, and oat hay with 3 g and 5 g of probiotic. Bromatological analyses of the hay were carried out, as well as evaluations of feed intake, apparent digestibility, weight gain, body length growth, feed conversion ratio, and body condition. The results showed that alfalfa hay had a higher content of protein and minerals, while oat hay had a higher fiber content. In terms of digestibility, the treatment with alfalfa hay + 5 g of probiotic achieved the highest value. However, the treatment with oat hay + 5 g of probiotic showed the best feed conversion ratio and the highest body growth, standing out as the most efficient treatment. Additionally, no health disorders or mortality were recorded during the experiment, confirming the safety of the applied treatments. In conclusion, the inclusion of probiotics in guinea pig diets improves digestibility, productive efficiency, and growth, with the effect depending on the interaction between hay type and probiotic dosage.
