Informed consent in surgery requires patients to receive clear and understandable information about the procedure, its risks, benefits, and associated care. Objective: to evaluate the level of understanding of informed consent among surgical patients at Martín Icaza General Hospital in 2026. Methodology: a quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive, prospective study was conducted. The participants were 102 patients scheduled for surgery. A structured questionnaire was used and validated by three experts, with an Aiken’s V coefficient of 0.94. Data were processed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS version 25. Results: patients aged 25–34 years predominated (34.3%), as did females (60.8%), participants with secondary education (77.5%), rural residents (67.6%), and those without previous surgical history (56.9%). A total of 97.1% reported receiving an explanation of the procedure, and 95.1% stated that they had understood it. All 102 participants obtained overall knowledge scores between 17 and 22 points, corresponding to a high or excellent level; 81 patients (79.4%) achieved the maximum score. Furthermore, 95.1% considered the language clear, 97.1% perceived the information as sufficient, and 98.0% reported that their questions were answered clearly. However, 50.0% indicated, either partially or affirmatively, that they needed additional information. Conclusion: although self-reported understanding and overall scores were favorable, individual understanding should be verified before surgery through supplementary explanations and questions that assess what the patient has understood.
