| dc.description | ABSTRACT Cannabis and its byproducts have been used for medicinal and recreational purposes due to their ability to act at a molecular level in the brain and other organs of the body. In Ecuador, as of June 21, 2020, the cultivation and harvesting of cannabis has been legalized, according to the Comprehensive Organic Penal Code (COIP), as well as its production, industrialization, commercialization, and exportation, provided that the THC values are below 1%, thus considering it as non-psychoactive cannabis. This research determined the antioxidant activity of cannabis using the ABTS method and the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity using the red blood cell membrane stabilization technique. The results in both cases appear promising, even surpassing commercially available drugs that were used for comparison. The use of non-psychoactive cannabis is recommended as a palliative measure as long as the origin of the products, their bio-equivalence, and medical recommendation are guaranteed. | dc.description.abstract | RESUMEN EJECUTIVO El Cannabis y sus subproductos han sido utilizados con fines medicinales y recreativos, debido a su capacidad para actuar a nivel molecular en el cerebro y otros órganos del cuerpo. En el Ecuador a partir del 21de junio del 2020 se ha legalizado la plantación y cosecha del cannabis, esto de acuerdo al Código Orgánico Integral Penal (COIP), además de su producción, industrialización, comercialización y exportación, siempre y cuando cumpla con valores de (THC) inferiores al 1%, considerándolo, así como cannabis no psicoactivo. En la presente investigación se determinó la actividad antioxidante del cannabis mediante el método ABTS, y la actividad antiinflamatoria in vitro utilizando la técnica de estabilización de la membrana con glóbulos rojos. Los resultados en los dos casos parecen prometedores, superando incluso a los medicamentos de uso comercial que fueron objetos de comparación. El uso del Cannabis no psicoactivo es recomendado como medida paliativa siempre y cuando se garantice la procedencia de los productos, la bio-equivalencia de los mismos y la recomendación médica.
